"Eldritch Karaoke" Wins Best Short Animation and "A Simple Killing" Takes Best Short Film and Audience Award at Waterford International Film Festival

The 18th Waterford International Film Festival was a proud moment for Eldritch Karaoke and A Simple Killing, with both films receiving top awards. These projects highlight the talent and creativity of Irish filmmakers and composers, including Emer Landers, a female film composer whose work has been integral to both productions.

Eldritch Karaoke won Best Short Animation for its dark humour and musical depth. Written, directed, and produced by Joe Loftus, the film explores a surreal, musical afterlife. Emer Landers composed the original score, a key element of the storytelling. Featuring vocals by the Musical Theatre Society “Entracte” and a performance by the Budapest Scoring Orchestra, her music adds an evocative, otherworldly layer to the animation.

A Simple Killing earned both Best Short Film and the Virtual Audience Award. Directed by Jason Branagan, written by Mark Conway, and produced by Emer Durcan of Western Front Studios and Mark de Carreau of Five Line Films, this horror-thriller combines atmospheric cinematography by Brian Durcan, a gripping narrative, and a striking setting at Bellefield House and Gardens in Offaly. The film has already been recognised at Raindance and Newport Beach Film Festivals, underscoring the strength of collaboration within Irish cinema. It was awarded €10,000 by the Film Offaly Short Film Bursary 2023 and stars Daphne Cheung, Claire Gavin, and Aidan O'Callaghan.

The Waterford International Film Festival, judged this year by guest judge Moe Dunford (Vikings, Black 47), continues to provide a platform for emerging and established talent in Irish filmmaking. By celebrating contributions across categories like Best Short Animation and Best Short Film, it recognises the work of composers such as Emer Landers, who plays a vital role in elevating these films.

With Eldritch Karaoke heading to the Belfast International Film Festival and A Simple Killing continuing its festival journey, the contributions of Irish filmmakers and composers like Emer Landers remain in focus, showcasing the creative energy of Ireland’s film industry.
